Ronald Searle was born in 1920 in Cambridge and went to the Cambridge School of Art. When he was fifteen his first humorous drawings were published in the Cambridge Daily News. He joined the Royal Engineers in 1939, fought in Malaya, and was captured by the Japanese. He spent a year on the Burma Railway and was discharged after three and a half years from Changi Gaol in Singapore. By the time he was released from the army in 1946 he was already contributing to national publications. Since then, he has worked widely in England, on the Continent, and in America as a special features artist for Holiday magazine and Life. He worked for a while in Hollywood, has designed two award-winning films, and five films have also been based on his characters, the girls of St. Trinian's:
He joined the staff of Punch in 1956 and directed a small publishing firm in London. (from the back cover of THE PENGUIN RONALD SEARLE, 1960).
These are the books I have; if you have any others to sell, please contact me. Particularly looking for SLIGHTLY FOXED - BUT STILL DESIRABLE. My copies are not for sale and I have no idea where you might buy them. Try eBay. I'm not in touch with Ronald Searle and I don't know how to contact him. Try his publishers.
Click here for a 90th birthday interview with Searle in 2010.
